125th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar celebrated at Kathmandu
Embassy of India, B.P Koirala India-Nepal Foundation and Indian Cultural Centre celebrated 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on 14th April 2016 at Radisson Hotel, Kathmandu. The President of Nepali Congress and former Prime Minister of Nepal, Rt. Hon’ble Mr. Sher Bahadur Deuba was the Chief Guest of the programme and former Minister Ms. Hisila Yami was the Guest of Honour in the programme.
Dr. B.R Ambedkar was a great economist, politician and social reformer who inspired a generation of Indians and campaigned against social discrimination of Dalits, while also supporting the rights of women and labour. He was independent India’s first law minister and the principal architect of the Constitution of India. Dr. Ambedkar was also known as ‘Babasaheb’. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the highest civilian award of India, the Bharat Ratna, in 1990.
Speaking at the programme, the Ambassdor of India to Nepal, Shri Ranjit Rae highlighted the contribution made by Dr. Ambedkar in drafting the Constitution of India and giving the Constitution its very essence as a document for political and socio-economic rejuvenation of the country. Chief Guest, Mr. Deuba also highlighted Dr. Ambedkar’s contribution to the upliftment of the weaker sections in India, which was made possible through the rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
The programme was attended by more than three hundred people from different fields. Members of associations working for upliftment of weaker sections, social activists and media persons joined in the celebration of the birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar. Ambassador Rae mentioned that the birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar was also celebrated by United Nations in New York on 13th April this year.
